Many parishioners have contacted the
church inquiring as to the safety
of our pastor's family. Father Guyma traveled to Miami to be with his
family. All members of his immediate
family
were safe with his mom in New York, a sister in Paris and his brother
traveling with him. The only one unaccounted for was a sister in Haiti.
He learned that she is safe early yesterday as well as a few other
members of his extended family. Efforts are still underway for other
relatives and friends. Almost everyone in the Haitian Community is
affected by this disaster. We join with our brothers and sisters in
Haiti in their prayer and sorrows, they are in our hearts.
As a parish, there are plans to send
materials in the near future. As that information comes available it
will be posted both here and on Facebook. There was a special
collection for the victims in Haiti at the masses this past weekend.
That collection is destined for Catholic Relief Services. Catholic
Relief Services is already on the ground in Haiti and was there prior to
the earthquake. As Deacon Collins shared, rescue efforts are still
underway and he asked anyone who did not receive a copy of the list he
prepared for organization to which you would like to donate. If you call
the office on Tuesday and give your email address, he will see to it
that you receive a copy.
As plans are completed for a parish
response, the information will be posted here.
Please be aware that there are just as
many scams as legitimate charities for which you may donate, so please
be on guard. Our Sunday Visitor, a Catholic Organization is another good
resource for information. There are groups which are already there
and have been helping those in Haiti prior to this event. There are
local groups such as MedShare which can use volunteers and there are
many many efforts by many organizations to send money to Haiti. You are
advised to use caution and look into whatever charity you choose.
Please above all, keep families here and
in Haiti in your prayers. Help will be needed for sometime to come.
